So I just read an article here talking about Obama’s modern method for announcing his choice for vp. Rather than spending this post discussing the mechanics of Obama’s tactic, I want to talk about what I think it means.
This tactic pretty much sums up the entire air of Obama’s campaign, “Change”.
While texting has been around for a few years now, his utilization of it encourages young people to get involved in whats going on with the campaign and encourages the older generation to try new technologies. All pending on an individuals curiosity about who his VP is going to be, of course.
A comment on the previously linked page caught my eye. “Wow. Now, not only is Mr. Obama an elitist, he’s a techno-elitist as well. Mr. McCain should make sure to point out that he’s willing to work with everyone, not just the tech-savvy young, by communicating through mass-media channels that are accessible to everyone.” - posted by Jason
Now I realize Jason may never read this response, and while I would put my response on washington post, that would require me to subscribe, and frankly I’m a subscription nitpick, otherwise I’d be bombarded with so much spam!
Back onto topic, chances are, McCain will most likely take that route, his whole campaign seems to be surrounded around trying to make Obama look bad and none of his time seems to be spent on improving his own campaign. Sad story…
My rebuttal: Obama’s texting ordeal is reserved for those who really want to know first. It’s as if there were a new movie coming out that you really wanted to see, and all of a sudden you read something that explains that anyone has the chance to go to a prescreening if they just text “blah blah blah” to 1234. It’s not like that movie is not ever going to be shown again after the prescreening, everyone will have their chance to enjoy it when it’s widely released.
Same deal with Obama’s VP choice, if you want to know first, even if you’re not tech savvy, you will find a way to sign up to find out first, but the mass media will get the information and spread it to the rest of the anti technology world in due time, it’s not as if a cell phone will be the only means the information will travel.
I applaud Obama and how he’s been handling his campaign. While there will always be criticizing, Obama’s campaign tends to focus on the issues and not on battling McCain’s stance on those issues.
